BDH "Halloween" Ball at Beamish Hall on 31st October, 2002
In the best tradition of the Braes, it was
loud, proud, hot and full of drunks, myself included!
The meet and greeters in suitably ghoulish costume set the
tone for the evening. Many guests (bravely) chose to have a go at fancy dress.
So, apart from topping each others hunting stories, the main entertainment early
on was guessing what each fancy dress costume was meant to be and who was
underneath it. Some were easier that others. Witches, surgeons, ghosts and
corpses littered the dining room. But who was the guy in the hard hat with a
tool kit? And the lady in academic dress with a cane?
After an excellent, luridly described
dinner that turned out to be a very nice pâté with homemade chutney, followed
by lamb and roasted vegetables and sticky toffee pudding, we all set down to
enjoy the murder mystery. Few tears were shed for the victim "Blair"
whose rubber-masked impersonator was more animated and a lot less spooky than
the real thing. Whodunit? Had to be Jillian the jockey from Ireland via Iveston,
if only for a replay of the Irish accent. But who knows how or why. The table
next to me obviously did and promptly won the star prize of a free dinner at
Beamish Hall.
The after dinner disco started off
appropriately enough with Michael Jackson's Thriller but as I had an early start
the next morning, I made my excuses and left.
Thanks to everyone who organised it for
a brilliant night out. I really enjoyed myself.
